This leads to the image of reality as a series of rapidly replaced instants, compared to frames in a motion picture, with pulsation and repetition serving as signs of divine activity. The lecture then turns to the transmission of atomism back into Europe through Spain and Moorish universities. European thinkers inherited the Greek idea of atoms and vacuum, but gradually modified it. The speaker notes that medieval and Renaissance Europe remained deeply theological, yet increasingly materialistic and observational. Matter came to be treated as a reality in itself rather than as something wholly dependent on deity. European thinkers began to question whether the atom was truly indivisible, and this led to the idea of the divisible atom. As the concept evolved, matter and vacuum began to appear as related or even equivalent, with vacuum understood not as absolute nothingness but as a subtle condition composed of finer particles or states. Religion also intervened by arguing that where God is present, no true vacuum can exist. A further development is the rise of the continuum, a non-granular, homogeneous substance or energy opposed to atomistic granularity. The speaker links this to medieval concerns about nourishment, asking how atoms are sustained and whether they are self-sufficient or dependent on a larger continuum. Alchemy is then introduced as another important influence. Alchemists, including figures associated with Paracelsus, sought a basic substance underlying all compounds and believed that transformation required reduction to a neutral core before repolarization into a new form. This helped undermine the old four-element theory and encouraged the idea that elements themselves are compounds. The absolute monad is the source of all lesser monads and is identified with God or divine reality. The speaker emphasizes that for Leibniz, all external events are interpreted through the internal nature of the monad, making the world a matter of being versus seeming. The lecture expands on Leibniz’s implications for ethics, psychology, and metaphysics. Because each monad is complete in itself, no being can truly enter another’s experience; relationships are always mediated by interpretation. This is compared to Buddhist ideas of self-reliance and inner salvation. The speaker also describes monads as microcosms of the greater monad, with spiritual, psychic, and physical aspects corresponding to center, radius, and circumference. The body is treated as a wall or covering of the monad, and compounds are understood as collections of monads unified by a higher psychic principle or soul. Finally, the talk connects Leibniz’s ideas to modern concerns about atomic energy and chain reaction. If atoms are not merely matter but living energy units, then disturbing one may affect many others through shared polarity or common core. The speaker suggests that atomic fission may be understood as a violent transition through an energy barrier rather than true destruction.
